Short-Term Accommodation (STA) Through NDIS — What Sydney Families Need to Know

STA is one of the most valuable and most misunderstood supports in the NDIS. Here's everything families and coordinators in Sydney need to know.

Short-Term Accommodation — or STA — is one of the most valuable supports available through the NDIS, yet many families either don't know about it or don't fully understand how to access it. This guide explains exactly what STA is, how it differs from respite care, and how to include it in your NDIS plan.

What is Short-Term Accommodation?

Short-Term Accommodation is NDIS funding that covers a participant staying away from their usual home for a short period, with all the support and accommodation costs included. It can last from one night to several weeks, up to a maximum of 28 days per year.

STA serves two main purposes:

🌿

Carer respite

Gives family carers an extended break, knowing their loved one is supported and accommodated elsewhere.

🏠

Participant experience

Allows participants to experience greater independence, try new living arrangements, or build social connections away from home.

STA vs Respite Care — What's the Difference?

Many families confuse STA and respite care. They're related but different:

How Much STA Funding Can You Get?

The NDIA funds up to 28 days of STA per year. The daily rate varies depending on the level of support required (standard or complex). STA is funded from Core Supports.

The funded amount covers:

  • Accommodation costs
  • All meals provided during the stay
  • Support worker assistance during the stay
  • Any personal care needed

How to Get STA in Your NDIS Plan

STA must be included in your NDIS plan — it won't automatically appear. Here's how to get it:

1

Request it at your plan meeting

Tell your planner or LAC that you need STA funding. Explain why — carer burnout risk, need for independence experience, or another reason.

2

Provide evidence

A letter from your GP, OT, or support coordinator supporting the need for STA strengthens your request significantly.

3

Frame it as participant benefit

The NDIA funds STA for the participant's benefit — not just as carer relief. Explain how the time away supports the participant's goals.

4

Already have a plan? Request a review

If STA isn't in your current plan but you need it, ask your support coordinator to request an unscheduled plan review.

STA and Overnight Supports in Sutherland Shire

St Anastasia's Care provides overnight and extended respite care across the Sutherland Shire and St George region. While we don't operate a dedicated STA facility, we can provide the support component of an STA arrangement — including overnight active support and sleepover support for participants needing assistance through the night.

If you have STA funding and are looking for the support side of the arrangement, call us to discuss what's possible.

“STA is one of those supports that makes a real difference for families who are caring full-time. When it's used well, it gives everyone — the participant and the carer — space to breathe and recharge.”
