Understanding the NDIS
What Is the NDIS and Who Does It Support?
The National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) is an Australian Government initiative that provides funding to Australians under 65 who have a permanent and significant disability. The scheme gives participants choice and control over the supports they receive, allowing them to live more independently and participate in their community.
The NDIS supports people with physical, intellectual, psychosocial, sensory, and cognitive disabilities. It also supports early childhood development for children under 9 with developmental delays or disabilities. If you or a loved one has an eligible condition, you may be able to access funding for a wide range of supports.
NDIS funding is split across three support budget categories:
• Core Supports — day-to-day assistance with activities and daily living
• Capacity Building Supports — help to build skills and independence over time
• Capital Supports — funding for assistive technology and home modifications
Your NDIS Roadmap
How the NDIS Planning Process Works
The NDIS planning process can feel overwhelming at first — but it follows a clear sequence. Here's what to expect from your first contact through to receiving funded supports.
1
Access Request
Submit an access request to the NDIA (National Disability Insurance Agency) with evidence of your disability. You can do this by calling 1300055918 or asking a support coordinator to assist you.
2
Eligibility Assessment
The NDIA reviews your request and supporting documents to confirm whether you meet the age, residency, and disability criteria. This process typically takes up to 21 days.
3
Planning Meeting
If approved, you'll have a planning conversation with an NDIA planner or Local Area Coordinator (LAC) to discuss your goals, daily needs, and what supports will help you achieve them.
4
Plan Approval & Funding
Your NDIS plan is created and approved, outlining your support budgets across Core, Capacity Building, and Capital categories. You'll receive your plan and funding details in writing.
5
Choose Your Provider
You can now choose registered NDIS providers to deliver your supports. Sydney Care Support is here to help you understand your plan and start receiving the right services immediately.

Common Questions
NDIS FAQs — Your Questions Answered
New to the NDIS or unsure about your next step? Here are the questions we hear most often from participants and families in Sydney.
Am I eligible for the NDIS?
To be eligible for the NDIS you must be under 65 years of age, an Australian citizen or permanent resident, and have a permanent and significant disability that affects your ability to take part in everyday activities. Children under 9 with developmental delays may also be eligible under the Early Childhood approach.
What's the difference between self-managed, plan-managed, and NDIA-managed funding?
Self-managed means you control your funds and pay providers directly. Plan-managed means a registered plan manager handles payments on your behalf — giving you access to both registered and unregistered providers. NDIA-managed means the Agency pays registered providers directly. Sydney Care Support can work with all three management types.
How do I start with Sydney Care Support as my NDIS provider?
Simply contact us by phone or through our online enquiry form. We'll discuss your current plan, your goals, and which services suit your needs. We can begin services quickly once a service agreement is signed.
What if my NDIS plan doesn't cover everything I need?
We can help you prepare for your plan review and advocate for additional funding if your needs have changed. Our team is experienced in supporting participants through plan reviews to ensure funding reflects real support requirements.
Can Sydney Care Support provide support coordination?
Yes. Our support coordinators help you understand your plan, connect with the right services, and resolve any issues with your funding. Support coordination is funded under the Capacity Building budget in your NDIS plan.
Do you provide services outside of Sydney CBD?
Yes — we service the greater Sydney region including the Sutherland Shire, Western Sydney, Inner West, Northern Beaches, and surrounding areas. Contact us to confirm coverage in your specific suburb.
What happens at my first planning meeting with the NDIA?
You'll discuss your daily life, your goals, and the types of support that would help you. It helps to come prepared with a list of your needs and goals. You can bring a support person, carer, or advocate to the meeting.
